school district? superintendent pat skorkowsky will lay out his plan for the new year with this state-of-the- district address today. fox5's shannon moore is live outside cimarron high school with what we can expect this speech is an opportunity for the district to update the community on how they're doing. this year's theme.. leaping forward. superintendent skorkowsky plans to highlight the district's growth and accomplishments while adding what he calls "a personal touch" this year -- inviting guests on stage with him to share their experiences with the district's programs. we're going to have students there as part of the read by 3rd grade initiative. we're going to have parents and principals there.. we're going to have students there who have graduated to talk about how we help them get to the next level. from being career and college ready to closing the achievement gaps. skorkowsky tells us his goal is to provide schools and teachers with

resources they need the be sucessful. of course funding - coming into question. how does the distrct plan to move forward past these challenges we've been seeing .. overcrowded classrooms. teacher shortages and budget cuts. all of those issues expected to be addressed this morning the event starts at 10. it is not open to the public --- but it will be streamed live on the district's website. district officials also hosting a live twitter feed allowing them to interact with the communty. for more info check out our website at fox5vegas.com a man is in the hospital after an shooting... while in the driver's seat of a car. police say the shooting before 1 a-m. the car hit a it swerved off the the victim is expected to be okay. police haven't said who they're looking for or why the shooting happened. a drive-by shooting near the arizona charlies casino leaves one woman dead and another injured. it happened just before 2 o'clock

police say when they arrived on- scene -- on decatur near evergreen --they dead...slouched over the seat of a car. neighborhood say they woke up to several rounds of gunfire. lawrence artis: i "pap, pap, pap, pap" then you heard something go (in audible) then later you heard screeching i come out of my house and theres a car near the end of my block 15 some neighbors thing they've ever seen in that area. no arrests have been made. police are looking for a dark colored car and they say they have not rule out road rage as a possible motive behind the shooting. they're also not sure if the suspect and the victims knew each other. police are looking for the suspect in a deadly shooting during a party over the weekend. the shooting happened at an apartment complex near owens and h street on police say 2 men an argument both were taken to u-m-c. one of them died... and the other was treated for his

will have a crwe inside thee event --- and bring you the very latest in our later newscasts, tonight at 5 & 6. . 7 people including children will have to stay somewhere else after their home caught fire. here's what is left behind after a fire saturday night near sunset and boulder highway. smoke detectors gave the family time to get out safely. the cause of the fire was an electrical problem in the garage. the american red cross is helping the family. dozens of firefighters were able to get this fire at a valley apartment complex on maryland and vegas valley under control. no one was hurt yesterday morning. this is the second fire at this building in the past few months. a garden hose was used to try to put out this fire and alta. it started in a storage area outside the home. spread from the outside of the home to the attic. firefighters were in 10 minutes. but one person is receiving help cross. deadly crash on

police say 24 year old eric leppard turned himself in saturday afternoon. he's facing several charges including felony hit and run. leppard told police he was behind the wheel of a stolen mercedes when he hit a 50 year old woman crossing the street near boulder highway and warm springs last week. she died at the scene a university of virginia student detained in north korea for 2 months is now speaking out. in a video released by north korea, otto frederick warmbier confesses to a "hostile act" at a confesses to a "hostile act" at a press conference. (otto frederick warmbier/detained u.s. student) "i wish that the united states administration never manipulated people like myself in the future to commit crimes against foreign countries. north korean officials say the 21 year old was detained after trying to steal a political banner from the walls of a hotel last month. officials say warmbier requested the

has just awarded the nation's highest military honor to a navy seal for a hostage-rescue mission in afghanistan. you're taking a look at the ceremony underway right now at the white in 20-12 edward byers junior took part in a risky doctor kidnapped by the taliban. he and other seals saved dilip joseph who had been in captivity for about 4 days. doctor joseph says byers gave him - quote - "a second chance in life." byers will be the member to receive the medal of honor for actions in afghanistan. 7 people including children will have somewhere else after their home caught fire. here's what is left behind after a fire saturday night near sunset and boulder highway. smoke detectors gave the family time to get out safely. the cause of the fire was an electrical problem in the

cross is helping the family. dozens of firefighters were able to get this fire at a valley apartment complex on maryland and vegas valley under control. no one was hurt yesterday morning. this is the second fire at this building in the past few months. a garden hose was used to try to put out this fire near valley view and alta. it started in a storage area outside the home. crews say it spread from the outside of the home to the attic. firefighters were able to control it in 10 minus. no one was hurt-- but one person is receiving help from the red cross. a driver was arrested in a deadly crash on boulder highway. police say 24 year old eric leppard turned himself in saturday afternoon. he's facing several charges including felony hit and run. leppard told police he was behind the wheel of a stolen mercedes when he hit a 50 year old woman crossing the street near boulder highway and warm springs last week.

a university of virginia student detained in north korea for 2 months is now speaking out. in a video released by north korea, otto frederick warmbier confesses to a "hostile act" at a press conference.
